WWI memorial

Picture

St Silas is possibly the only church is Islington to have a WWI memorial in its grounds, and the memorial is unusual because it was erected in 1917, before the war had ended.

OUR WWI MEMORIAL

Our WWI memorial stands in the garden at the eastern end of our church (in Penton St, London N1 9UL).
The garden (managed by the London Borough of Islington) is usually open during daylight hours.

The sculptor was Arthur Walker, who made the statue of Florence Nightingale, which now forms part of the memorial to the Crimean War in Wellington Place. He also undertook some minor works at the royal residence at Sandringham.

The photos below were taken before some cleaning, repair & restoration took place in 2017.
